We traveled to San Jose Costa Rica with the Youth with a Mission group to build homes through Homes of Hope. Our friends the Francises and Hirzels have done this for years the first weekend of Thanksgiving break and we were excited to join. It was a very moving experience with time for working, learning new skills in a different environment, time for reflection, and speaking. The group is faith based leading to lots of talk about religion. There were about 120 of volunteers from Dallas including the Henderson girls. Our jobs included nailing the frame, the Sheetrock, cutting trim with the saw, cutting Sheetrock with a jigsaw, nailing trim, and nailing the shingles for the roof. We had police presence because we were in a rough neighborhood. The families are selected by the organization based on need. This trip they built 6 homes for 6 families. The houses have electricity but no plumbing. The trip was a success and the family wants to do it again next year.
